Regional “Business Accelerator Programme” gets off to a flying start

9th May 2017

The East of England LGA’s new “Business Accelerator” Programme, delivered in partnership with Essex County Council, got off to a flying start at the Induction day on Friday 24th April.

Four business “teams” drawn from councils across the East of England – two from Luton Borough, one from South Cambridgeshire District and one from “East Suffolk”, which covers Waveney and Suffolk Coastal Districts – came together to get a taste of what is in store for them over the next 8 weeks.

Unlike traditional “training” programmes, the Business Accelerator is both a learning AND a business development opportunity at the same time. The teams will be using techniques and toolkits over the course of the programme and applying these to their own business, effectively as they go along.

Over a series of master classes, they will build, develop and refine their real-life Business Plan before presenting this at an Assessment Centre session towards the end of June.

Feedback from those attending the first session has been very positive with one attendee commenting that they had “learned more about trading law today than in the whole of the last year”. The programme is facilitated by Caroline Adlem and Helen Hull from Essex County Council, along with EELGA Associate, Rob Hann, all experts with hands-on experience of helping local authority-owned or managed commercial enterprises to set up and flourish.

At a fixed cost of £10,000 for a local authority team of up to 5 people, the programme offers excellent value for money and a worthwhile investment for those either setting up or looking to rejuvenate a local authority business or traded service.

Registrations are now open for the next East of England LGA Business Accelerator programme, starting in September 2017 and you can find out more about this on our web-site at:

Alternatively, if you are a larger council with a number of businesses or commercial ventures that you would like to put through the Accelerator Programme, then it can be delivered for you as a bespoke, dedicated programme, based at your own offices.
